Children with Tracheostomies and otherwise medically complex Patients by improving their Quality of life and where we also provide\u00a0<strong>tailor made solutions<\/strong>\u00a0to hospitals and Intensive Care Units to save money and resources, whilst providing Quality Care!<\/p>\n<p>In the last blog I shared<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/home-health-care-in-australia-in-crisis-medically-complex-and-ventilated-patients-are-referred-to-the-ndis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Health Care in Australia in crisis: Medically complex and ventilated Patients are referred to the NDIS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can check out last week&#8217;s episode by clicking on the link\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/home-health-care-in-australia-in-crisis-medically-complex-and-ventilated-patients-are-referred-to-the-ndis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s blog I want to share another case study from one of our previous clients<\/p>\n<p><strong>INTENSIVE CARE AT HOME services for a 15 month old toddler, another \u201cwin-win\u201d situation and success story<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>INTENSIVE CARE AT HOME was privileged to look after 15 month old Jacob, who was in NICU and then PICU for the first 12 months of his life.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time during his first 12 months of his life, he spent on life support, more specifically, on a ventilator with tracheostomy.<\/p>\n<p>More than once, the family was told that Jacob wouldn\u2019t survive, but thankfully Jacob turned out to be remarkably resilient and he has been beating the odds!<\/p>\n<p>Jacob eventually got discharged home with the help of our service, where we then provided up to 24\/7 care in the home.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob had a tracheostomy, was oxygen dependent as well as having a PEG tube for feeding. Initially Jacob went home with a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube which became dislodged quite frequently due to reflux, chronic nausea and vomiting, as well as Jacob pulling it out quite frequently.<\/p>\n<p>The vomiting eventually subsided after Jacob had a fundoplication and a PEG inserted.<\/p>\n<p>We worked with Jacob and his family for four months until Jacob had the tracheostomy removed and got decannulated after four months of providing up to 24\/7 Intensive Home Care nursing. Jacob had the tracheostomy removed during a surgical procedure and it was successful.<\/p>\n<p>Without the involvement of a specialist service such as INTENSIVE CARE AT HOME, where we sent ICU\/PICU\/NICU nurses in the home up to 24\/7, Jacob would have either stayed in PICU or could have potentially died at home due to complications (including but not limited to inadvertent decannulation of the tracheostomy) that can only be safely managed by trained and highly skilled and experienced ICU\/PICU nurses!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1901\" src=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ichome-blog-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ichome-blog-1.png 1600w, https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ichome-blog-1-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ichome-blog-1-768x514.png 768w, https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ichome-blog-1-1024x685.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jacob was born prematurely and he had the following medical conditions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic lung disease in neonate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Cerebral palsy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquired subglottic stenosis in new born<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Congenital tracheomalacia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tracheostomy dependent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Oxygen dependent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower respiratory tract infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Upper respiratory tract infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>GORD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Frequent desaturations to &lt;92%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jacob initially on discharge to home wasn\u2019t very well and he had numerous challenging clinical situations to go through before he was getting more stable.<\/p>\n<p>This was partly due to ongoing vomiting and the risk of aspiration due to the vomiting.<\/p>\n<p>Without having ICU\/PICU nurses in the home Jacob would have lived in a sterile ICU\/PICU environment due to his medical condition and his family wouldn\u2019t have been able to go back home.<\/p>\n<p>Due to our professional service and having the skills and expertise available up to 24\/7 to keep a toddler with a tracheostomy and oxygen dependency out of ICU\/PICU also enabled his parents to go back to work at least part-time.<\/p>\n<p>By using a professional and <a href=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/accreditationquality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully accredited service<\/a>\u00a0like INTENSIVE CARE AT HOME, the department of health was able to cut the cost of the ICU\/PICU bed into less than 50%.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the \u201cin-demand\u201d ICU\/PICU bed was freed up and was ready for use for other critically ill children.<\/p>\n<p>To summarise this success story and highlight the \u201cwin-win\u201d situation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacob was able to go home after prolonged PICU\/NICU stay with the help of a professional and third party accredited service who sends ICU\/PICU\/NICU nurses into the home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An expensive and \u2018in-demand\u2019 $5,000 per bed day ICU bed was freed up for use of other critically ill children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The cost of specialised Intensive Care services was reduced to less than 50% of the cost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacob and his parents were finally able to leave hospital and have quality of life at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacob\u2019s Mom was able to go back to work part time to support the family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacob eventually had the tracheostomy removed (decannulation) but was able to spend the time at home before decannulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/intensivecareathome.com\/tracheostomy-care-tracheostomy-care-community\/\" included tracheostomy care, oxygen management, monitoring, PEG and Nasogastric tube management, suctioning, tracheostomy tube changes, respiratory management such as nebuliser management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Medications can and are administered by specialist nurses in the home with the provision of a medically prescribed drug chart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Nebulisers, analgesics and other PRN or \u2018as required\u2019 medications can therefore also be administered without parental intervention (as is the case with carers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>chest physiotherapy and specialist nurses effectively deal with emergency situations in a calm manner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Our team of ICU\/PICU nurses working with Jacob have a total of over 100 years ICU\/PICU experience, therefore making the environment stable for Jacob and his family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s another success story and it\u2019s another sign that medically complex Patients with ventilation, tracheostomy, oxygen dependency, PEG etc\u2026 can leave hospital and ICU\/PICU safely when looked after by a professional INTENSIVE CARE AT HOME nursing service.<\/p>\n<p>You can also
